Building History

The Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, a.k.a the Javits Center, is a large convention center located in Hell's Kitchen, ManhattanNew York City. The Javits Center has a total interior area of about 3million square feet and is noted as one of the busiest convention centers in the United States. Javits Center plays host to renowned annual events such as the New York International Auto Show, the New York Comic Con, and Anime NYC.

Project Scope

Phase 1 (I was not involved) with Siemens as our client, was to provide the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City construction management services to install the first roof area of an innovative microgrid featuring the largest rooftop solar array in Manhattan to date.

Phase 2 included our services as the CM to install a rooftop solar array on the 2nd roof area, minor MEPS upgrades internal to the building, and provisions for a battery storage containment area (batteries furnished by the client).

Role as a Fill in Project Manager

While transitioning to hand off and/or closeout packages for 50 Hudson Yards to pre-construction services and bidding with Trades for the Cadillac & Buick/GMC Projects, I stepped in to provide a Lead PM role for the start-up of the Javits Phase 2 work.

Start-Up Responsibilities included:

  • Familiarizing project information with the previous, current, and to be next Lead Superintendent

  • Meeting with the client for existing condition tie-in reviews, scope of work clarifications, and next steps

  • Providing internal company experience suggestions to the client for the next phases of work. This included consulting with others in separate company departments and prospective Trades to perform the work.

  • Set up project quality & document control organization and support for our on-site set-up/presence

  • Devise items to be included in the submittal register and start the submittal process

  • Hand off project to the PM selected to run the job and remain "accessible" for any questions, clarifications, and follow ups needed.
